High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Uralla Central School, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is an integral part of everyday learning. Many of our students demonstrate exceptional potential, and we are committed to nurturing that potential into remarkable achievements.
Our teachers assess students’ learning needs within the classroom and implement evidence-based teaching strategies to both challenge and extend their abilities. We offer varied learning pathways, such as enrichment and extension programs, along with opportunities for acceleration.
Our classrooms provide supportive environments that foster a strong sense of belonging while encouraging creativity, risk-taking, and collaboration. Groupings are flexible, students take on leadership roles, and feedback is focused on strengths with clear goals and opportunities for self-assessment.
To effectively meet the diverse needs of all students, including those who are high potential or gifted, our teachers actively participate in ongoing professional learning.
At Uralla Central School, we are committed to recognising and supporting students who show high potential or giftedness. This means many of our students have outstanding abilities or talents in areas like thinking, creativity, academic skills, or leadership. Our goal is to help these students develop their strengths fully and reach their highest potential.
Identifying and Supporting Learning Needs:
Our teachers carefully observe and assess students within the classroom to understand their individual learning needs. This includes looking at how well students grasp concepts, how quickly they learn, and what types of challenges they need to stay motivated. We use evidence-based teaching methods—meaning strategies proven by research to be effective—to tailor tasks that challenge students appropriately without overwhelming them. This helps extend their thinking and skills beyond the standard curriculum.
Learning Pathways:
To meet diverse learning needs, we offer a range of programs. Enrichment programs provide deeper or broader learning opportunities beyond what is normally taught. Extension activities encourage students to apply their knowledge in new or complex ways. For some students, acceleration options are available, where they can move through the curriculum faster than usual, if they are ready. These pathways ensure each student can learn at a pace and level that suits them best.
Classroom Environment and Culture:
We create classrooms where all students feel safe, respected, and included—a strong sense of belonging. This positive environment encourages students to take risks, such as trying challenging problems or creative projects, without fear of failure. Collaboration is encouraged, so students work together, share ideas, and learn from each other. Flexible grouping means students might work alone, in pairs, or small groups depending on the activity and their learning needs. Students are also encouraged to take on leadership roles, helping their peers and contributing to class decisions.
Feedback and Assessment:
Feedback is an important part of learning. At Uralla Central, feedback focuses on students’ strengths and what they’re doing well. Teachers set clear goals with students so they know what to aim for. Students are taught to reflect on their own learning through self-assessment, helping them become more independent and confident learners. This approach motivates students to improve continually and take ownership of their progress.
Teacher Professional Learning:
To support these efforts, our teachers regularly participate in professional development. This means they attend training, workshops, and collaborative sessions to learn new strategies and keep up-to-date with the latest research on teaching gifted and high potential students. This ongoing learning helps teachers meet the diverse needs of all students effectively and ensures every learner has the opportunity to succeed.
In summary, at Uralla Central School, supporting students with high potential and giftedness is a whole-school commitment. From identifying individual needs to offering tailored learning opportunities and fostering a positive, challenging classroom, we work hard to help every student thrive and achieve their best.
Our students take part in many different programs across the state that help them learn more and use their talents.
They join activities like Sports Representation, Future teachers club, Agriculture competitions, Student leadership opportunities, Parliament visits, Premiers Spelling Bee, Chess club, International exchange program and Debating.
The NSW Department of Education and other state programs offer support for students with high abilities. We help students get ready for these competitions, submit their work, and think about what they learned from each experience. This way, every opportunity helps them improve and grow.
